Apple Self Storage’s Policy on Storage of Lithium-Ion Batteries
Purpose
This policy outlines guidelines for the safe storage of lithium-ion batteries within Apple Self Storage facilities. The objective is to minimize risks associated with these batteries and ensure compliance with safety standards. Lithium-ion batteries pose a significant fire hazard if they are not properly handled and stored, especially batteries without the CSA or ULC certification. Lithium-Ion batteries can ignite due to overcharging, damage, overheating, or short circuiting and the resulting fire can spread quickly and cause severe damage to property and stored items. Due to the risk associated with non-certified lithium-ion batteries, Apple Self Storage has implemented a complete ban on the storage of such devices and strongly encourages inspecting CSA and ULC certified batteries regularly.
Policy Statement
This policy applies to all customers who use, store, or handle lithium-ion batteries and aims to prevent the occurrence of fire associated with failed lithium-ion batteries and ensure the safety of the customers, employees, and property. The policy also aims to educate customers and employees on the risks associated with these batteries and the best practices for storing them safely.
Policy Requirements
- Out of commitment to the safety of our storage community, only lithium-ion batteries that have a valid CSA or ULC certification will be permitted to be stored. These certifications ensure the safety and performance of the batteries. We trust our customers to ensure all stored batteries meet these standards, as they play a crucial role in maintaining a safe environment for everyone.
- To maintain the highest safety standards, we ask that lithium-ion batteries not be charged within storage units or hallways. This policy is in place as most fire incidents occur while charging, especially when unsupervised. Please note that adherence to this policy is essential for the safety of all, and failure to comply may necessitate corrective measures, including potential eviction.
- For those storing certified lithium-ion batteries, we encourage regular inspections for any signs of damage or wear. Prompt attention to and removal of any compromised batteries will help ensure the continued safety and integrity of our storage facilities. We appreciate your diligence in this matter.
Policy Enforcement
Self storage customers are responsible for what they store, including any damage or loss that arises as a result from a lithium-ion battery igniting for whatever reason. Every customer will be responsible for ensuring that they are storing items in compliance with this policy on the safe storage of lithium-ion batteries and understand that they will be held liable for any damage caused as a result of items they are storing.
Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed and will be updated and revised based on the feedback from the authorities, as well as the changes in the technology, standards, and regulations of lithium-ion batteries. The customers and employees will be notified of any changes or amendments to this policy in a timely manner.
