Packing And Self Storage Tips To Help You Move
When it comes to preparing for a move, a little advance planning can make the whole thing go so much smoother. Whether you’re taking everything to your new home or putting some stuff into a self-storage unit, these packing and storage tips can help take the stress out of moving day.
PACKING TIPS
Gather packing materials
Collect as many boxes as you think you’ll need, along with tape (in different colours), markers, labels, and packing material (e.g., foam shipping noodles, bubble wrap, packing paper or towels).
Stick with one size
If possible, try to use uniformly sized boxes for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25-30 pounds. Don’t overpack boxes and make them too heavy.
Label and number your boxes
List the contents of your boxes on all four sides; number the boxes and seal with tape. Make a detailed list of what’s in each box by number.
Colour code the contents
Pick a colour for each room and colour code boxes that belong to that room. Also label the door of each room with a matching coloured sticker.
Put priority items in clear plastic bins
Pack the items you will need after the move in a clear plastic bin, like paper towels, trash bags, box cutter, cleaning materials, tools, kitchen utensils and cookware, power bars, and toilet paper.
Open me first
Use red duct tape to seal boxes that need to be opened first.
Wrap It Up
Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Stack them on top.
Fragile
Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked “FRAGILE” and stacked on end. Pack plates vertically, like records. They’ll be less likely to break.
Buy a roll of stretch wrap
Use stretch wrap to group items together. Also it can be used to protect your furniture from getting scuffed and scratched.
Don’t unpack dresser drawers
Keep items intact in a dresser drawer by covering them with stretch wrap. Take the drawers out of the dresser for the move and then simply put them back in.
Stack
Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top.
In the can
Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside each other.
In the bag
Put any small parts for things you have to take apart in sandwich bags and tape them to the back of the item they belong to. Do the same with cords for your electronics.
Vacuum seal your out-of-season clothing
They’ll take up less space and can go directly into storage in your new place or into a self-storage unit.
SELF-STORAGE TIPS
If you’re going to be putting any of your belongings into a self-storage unit, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Keep it small
Rent the smallest storage unit you will need, and pack it full.
Prepare
Prepare your space by placing a protective cover on the floor under your goods.
Keep it dry
Place your storage items on 2×4 boards or on pallets to guard against dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp. Leave a small space between the walls and boxes to allow for air circulation.
Easy access
Plan your storage space. Place items that you may need to access often in the front of the unit and try to leave an aisle down the centre of the storage unit to get in and out.
CAUTION
Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (e.g., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, or paint) in your storage unit.
